Green Careers - Opportunity in a Tough Job Market

Jobs are in short supply right now. So, if you are a job seeker or a recent graduate trying to decide on a future career, what is likely to be the fastest growing job arena? It may be in the green job sector, where employment is expected to grow and as overall green businesses and supporting industries develop into a $1.5 trillion economic behemoth.

Here are five top five industry sectors that are likely to be major players in an expanding green economy, according to GreenCareersGuide.

1. Landfill Gas So-called biogas generation is like grabbing the low hanging fruit of alternative energy. Jobs will be available as landfill gas plant operators, technicians, and engineers.

2. Solar Power The solar field is trending up and offers many opportunities for solar panel installation and sales for both residential and business customers. There are also companies developing improved photovoltaic panel technology. More colleges, technical schools and extension services are offering programs to support this area. This field is also an opportunity for the entrepreneur who would like to start a business.

3. Wind Power Wind energy seems to have a lower profile than "clean coal" or biofuels, but the market for wind energy quietly continues to grow, so much so that wind power now employs more Americans than the coal industry. Engineers are in demand for system design and if you have a background as a machinist you may be able to turn that into a job as a wind turbine machinist or wind turbine installer.

4. General Engineering The opportunities here are large, ranging from jobs building and operating waste treatment and recycling facilities to more efficient transportation systems. Developing the smart grid will also create a lot of demand for engineers. For the best jobs, a college engineering degree will be a prerequisite.

5. Green Construction The federal and local governments continue to require more certification and higher energy efficiency on all new buildings and retrofits. Green construction, with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, will likely become a big business.

I will add a sixth opportunity.

6. Alternative Fuels

Biofuels: Employers will be looking for biotechnology and biochemical engineering training, as the focus of developing this technology is synthetic biology and biotechnology

Non-biofuels: Engineering skills are a requirement, as processes must be scalable to VERY large volume.

Looking for jobs in businesses that support greater energy efficiency or more efficient use of resources is likely to offer better opportunities for job seekers for the next decade or more. The six industry sectors profiled here look especially attractive. If you have the time, get relevant training or education that will make you stand out as an applicant.
