Many people think that Capitalism is simply another word for buying and selling. In fact, Capitalism is much more than that. Humans have been exchanging things with each other, and buying and selling, and making profits for thousands and thousands of years. Capitalism is a distinct era in human history. It is a system whereby societies are organised and arranged according to the profit motive. Under Capitalism, resources are allocated or not allocated depending on whether such allocation will make a profit for the Capitalists (those who own the the means of production, distribution, and exchange). This is how Capitalism radically differs from other eras in history. The need to satisfy people's needs is submitted to the need to generate profits for a minority of people. So in Capitalism, people are allowed to starve and die of preventable diseases en mass because feeding and curing them will not generate a profit for those who control the resources.
